Over the past year we have cultivated staghorn coral tissue on our rope nursery and have transplanted small pieces on sponsored domes placed on a 35 foot deep reef here in Sosua. Despite some minor setbacks, the domes are looking good. The zipties used to attach the corals are grown over and new "shoots" are blossoming!
Storms over the last few months of last year had actually moved some of the domes and we have had to replace them into position, but the corals themselves have survived. We have learned that the deep water domes, the ones at 35 feet, seem to grow better and are healthier than the shallow water domes. We have also realized that the corals from the nursery grow better on the domes than corals gathered locally or from other locations and due to this we are now populating the nursery with the sample tissues from other areas, letting them grow there, and then replanting them on the domes. We have also seen evidence that coral samples taken from a certain depth seem to do better if they are replanted at that depth.
We were fortunate enough to catch the attention of environmentalist and TV host Jeff Corwin and our project was featured on "Ocean Treks" show on ABC!
